"It takes a village" - New Parent Group

Did you feel that since the arrival of your baby, the most precious being in the world, you have lost your self? Being constantly needed and having hardly anytime to take care of your own needs? Your partner is there but you have no time for each other? Where a trip to the shops alone feels like "you" time?

This is how I felt as a new parent.

If you are an international parent, having a baby abroad without a strong community, can leave you feeling isolated, exhausted and unable to fully enjoy your new family life.

This is why I created the It takes a village group.

Ten group sessions of 1.5 hour each. The first and last sessions are face to face. Session 5 is a social meeting where we have lunch together. In between we meet 7 times online. This is designed to facilitate parents who are at home with a child during our group or parents who work and wish to attend during their work day.

I want this to be accessible so if you are looking after your child on the day of the group, you can bring your child with you.

Themes that we will explore :

  • birth stories processing
  • looking after my self
  • my self and my child
  • my emotions and needs
  • my family relationships
  • relationship with my significant other
  • rediscovering my self
  • creating a caring community

Duration: 10 weeks

Location: Hybrid 3 face to face meetings and 7 online meetings.

Cost: 600 per person

Therapy for children and parents

Mitos provides therapy for children and parents, individually or in family therapy, depending on the presenting problem and need.

Systemic psychotherapy is a highly effective form of therapy with children and adolescents, particularly with issues such as: anxiety, low mood, trauma, school refusal, isolation, emotional difficulties, eating issues, behavioural concerns, screen misuse.

Where it is not possible for the child to attend, parents can still benefit from systemic therapy as it will help you to understand and feel confident about addressing any concerns you have for your child.

Aggressive, controlling or self destructive behaviours in children

When your child begins to display these kind of behaviours you can feel very disheartened and powerless. Often individual therapy with the child is not enough.

For these kind of concerns the most effective approach is Non Violent Resistance (NVR). It can also be found under the name New Authority.

NVR helps parents and carers address aggressive, controlling or self-destructive behaviours whilst also strengthening their relationship with their child.

The NVR approach focuses on increasing parental influence through de-escalation and by increasing support from the wider system (e.g. extended family, school etc).

NVR is not a behavioural parenting method. It focuses on the needs of the parents and supports them in building stronger and safer relationships with their child. Parents say that NVR helps them to get closer to their children and to feel stronger in dealing with problems.

NVR therapy takes places with parents or caregivers, alone. This is particularly helpful when the young person is refusing therapy.
